Howard Solomon
Collage
About:
I'm an old-school, analog collage artist. I do not use computers in my work. My tools are a pair of scissors and an X-acto knife, and my images come from abandoned books, magazines, maps and catalogs. I trust serendipity and intuition. When an image triggers a memory or a dream, I know a collage is in the works.
I started making found-object sculpture and collage in 2008, after four decades of teaching history at NYU, Tufts, and USM. My work draws upon cultural history and the history of sexuality, as well as a life-long interest in spirituality and religion.
For the past five years, I have concentrated on collage.
I've lived in Bowdoinham, Maine since 1999. In addition to being a member of the Bowdoinham Guild of Artisans, I formerly served on the board of the Merrymeeting Arts Center.
